The Tampere-based startup Polar Night Energy, innovator of the world-renowned Sand Battery, is now looking for an Automation Engineer to join the R&D team in Tampere and contribute to building a more sustainable future. The role is permanent and we hope you can start working as soon as possible.
Key responsibilities
As an Automation Engineer, you will lead the planning and development of automation systems across Polar Night Energy's products. In this role, you will act as a trusted owner of the company's automation processes, ensuring their efficiency and reliability. You will play a key role in designing and further developing the automation solutions and overseeing their seamless integration into Polar Night Energy's operational processes. More specifically, your diverse tasks will include:
- Designing, specifying, and developing automation systems for Polar Night Energy's projects, focusing on both electricity and heat production processes.
- Collaborating with external automation and electrical suppliers to ensure smooth implementation and maintenance.
- Leading the planning, development, and testing phases for new pilot equipment automation systems
- Developing operational guidelines and optimizing automation systems for efficiency and safety
- Monitoring working systems and developing means to improve automation-related parts

You have already gained experience from industrial automation projects and you have an understanding of control logic design. We hope you have:
- A degree in automation, electrical engineering, or a related field (Bachelor's or Master's)
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in industrial automation or related projects
- Knowledge of automation logic design, and system integration
- Familiarity with programming and automation logic systems like Siemens, Omron, or Honeywell
- Self-driven attitude and ability to independently manage and prioritize your work
- Proficiency in English; Finnish is seen as a plus
We consider as an asset:
- Experience with data analysis and optimization in automation systems.
- Understanding of electrical diagrams and basic electrical design principles.
- Experience in commissioning, maintaining, or installing automation systems

Polar Night Energy designs, develops, manufactures, delivers and operates high temperature thermal energy storages. These energy storages enable upscaling wind and solar energy production and stopping combustion based heat production. The technology is based on sensible heat of solid materials and a patented closed-loop air circulation system for heat transfer. The company has a commercial product with Technology Readiness Level 9; the first commercial system has operated in Kankaanpää since summer 2022 and the construction of a much bigger system has started in Pornainen spring 2024.
