Doctoral researcher in sustainable mechatronics

The Laboratory of Sustainable Mechatronics at the LUT School of Energy Systems is looking for a junior researcher (doctoral researcher) in sustainable mechatronics. The Laboratory of Sustainable Mechatronics operates under the Department of Mechanical Engineering and aims to advance sustainable technologies through cutting-edge research and innovative solutions.

What we are looking for

The person appointed for this position will study bio-inspired autonomous systems; specifically, the development of intelligent, autonomous artificial fish designed for sustainable applications in environmental monitoring, water treatment, and industrial inspection. This research integrates digital twin technology, smart materials, and energy-efficient control systems to create adaptable and environmentally friendly robotic solutions.

Collaboration and Supervision

This position offers a unique opportunity to collaborate closely with the Department of Autonomous Systems at Brno University of Technology (BUT). This collaboration will provide the candidate with access to additional expertise, facilities, and resources in advanced autonomous technologies, strengthening the research and expanding its potential applications.

Candidate profile

Applicants are expected to have a strong background in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, control systems, or a closely related field. Ideal candidates will have experience or a demonstrated interest in digital twin technology, simulations, AI-based control, and bio-inspired design principles, as these are core aspects of the research.

Research focus

The research deals with the development of bio-inspired autonomous systems, combining advanced mechatronics, artificial intelligence, and sustainable material use. The focus will be on designing a robotic fish with digital twin integration, capable of efficient, autonomous operation in water environments. The aim is to contribute to sustainable practices by providing solutions that support environmental and industrial applications in a carbon-neutral and resource-efficient manner.

Qualifications

The junior researcher must have a master's degree (M.Sc. (Tech.) or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g., mechanical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, or similar) and demonstrate the ability and motivation to complete the doctoral studies within their normative duration. Applicants should be capable of independent research and have excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively within our international research network.

Application process

Junior researchers must submit an application for the right to complete doctoral studies, including all required appendices, to the LUT Doctoral School within the first two months of the employment relationship.

Employment relationship and pay

The employment relationship starts with a fixed one-year term including a six-month trial period. The contract can be extended by three years, provided that the studies and research have progressed satisfactorily in the first year.

The work will start in early 2025. The job is located in Lahti, Finland. The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The typical gross annual starting salary for a junior researcher is approximately 32 500 euros.

Applications

The deadline for applications is 28 November 2024 at midnight, Finnish local time (UTC+2h).

Please fill out the online application form and attach the following documents in English and in PDF format:

  • Cover letter highlighting your skills relevant to the position and describing why you are interested in and suitable for the position
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) following the guidelines of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity
  • Scanned copies of your original bachelor's and master's degree certificates and transcripts of records; if the original documents are not in English or Finnish, each document must be accompanied by an official certified translation into English or Finnish, and if the degree is still unfinished, an official estimate of your graduation date is required from your supervisor or school
  • Copy of your master's thesis (or thesis draft/abstract) or any other significant research work completed
  • List of publications (if any)
  • One-page statement of your research interests and how they align with the project's objectives
  • Contact information of two people who can provide references

Only applications that include the required documents will be considered.
