Ship Theory Engineer

We are Helsinki Shipyard - a company designing, building and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. Our roots date back to 1865, and we proudly continue the story of Helsinki's own Shipyard, in the heart of Helsinki.

With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. To provide you with some perspective, we've built 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

Since November 2023, Helsinki Shipyard has been part of the Canadian Davie group.

We are now looking for a Ship Theory Engineer to join our 12-people Project Design team!

In this role, you'll contribute to ship design from initial concept through to the final delivery, playing a key part in the Naval Architecture department at our Shipyard. You'll collaborate with a dedicated team of specialists to create top-quality ship designs and solutions.

"The ship project takes from 2-3 years, and you can literally see the completion of the ship from plans to the finished ship ready for her maiden voyage outside one's own window. It's always a moving moment when a ship leaves for her home port" - Mohamed Elameen, Ship Theory Engineer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform ship stability and subdivision calculations with accuracy for each design phase
  • Develop and maintain the ship's space model, ensuring data is up-to-date and accessible
  • Prepare design documents and plans for approval
  • Contribute to tank arrangement development with the project team
  • Assist in final ship delivery documentation
  • Participate in weight estimation and control efforts throughout the project lifecycle (Previous experience in this area is a plus, but we are open to providing training)
  • Help improve tools and processes used within the design team

Educational requirements:

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Naval Architecture is essential for the position. Work experience may vary, and the role can be adapted according to your skills and experience.

Ideal experience:

  • Experience in ship design and/or shipbuilding, with a focus on ship stability and damage stability
  • Experience with Icebreakers or Passenger Ships is a plus
  • Familiarity with NAPA Software
  • Problem-solving mindset with a willingness to learn
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Capable of working both independently and collaboratively
  • Able to meet deadlines under tight timelines

Skills/competence in ship safety, structural design and ship weight estimation/control as well as ship concept development are highly appreciated. Fluent English is necessary as we have international clients and suppliers.

Why you'll thrive here:

  • You'll participate in the entire design process, from conceptual drafts to collaborating with suppliers to the final product at the pier.
  • Our tight-knit Design team values each individual's impact on projects.
  • Sustainability is central to us - we participate in joint Helsinki sea monitoring, where the quality and harmful substances in the water are monitored.
  • Flexible working options - based in Helsinki or Turku, with hybrid work possibilities. Our team members work both remotely and on-site at the office, depending on the tasks and project phase.
  • An environment where you can thrive, learn, and grow your expertise.
