Doctoral programme in Wildlife Biology research, doctoral researchers

Doctoral researcher positions funded by the University of Helsinki

Doctoral researchers for fixed-term positions for different scientific fields

The doctoral programmes at the University of Helsinki are seeking doctoral researchers for fixed-term positions starting from January 1, 2025. Doctoral researchers at the university conduct their dissertation research as part of an international scientific community under the guidance of leading researchers in their field.

Please note that applications are also open simultaneously for three-year doctoral researcher positions as part of the national doctoral education pilot. You can find more information about these positions on our website.

Position description

The duties of a doctoral researcher are to work on their doctoral thesis and to complete the doctoral studies determined by the curriculum of each doctoral programme. The duties may also include teaching and other tasks for up to 5 % of the annual working time. The duration of the employment contract depends on the phase of the appointee's thesis and starts with a probation period of six months.

The University of Helsinki offers:

  • The opportunity to work in an international, multidisciplinary research community.
  • Excellent research infrastructure and support services.
  • Occupational healthcare and other comprehensive employee benefits.
  • Support for settling into Finland and integrating into the University of Helsinki.
  • A competitive salary.

The starting salary for a doctoral researcher is typically between €2,400 and €2,800 per month, increasing as the dissertation work progresses. The salary is based on levels 2-4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research staff used at Finnish universities. In addition to the task-specific salary component, a personal performance-based component is also paid.

The University of Helsinki Doctoral School has 33 doctoral programs, and approximately 500 doctoral degrees are awarded annually.

Eligibility Requirements

The appointee must obtain the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki within the probation period. The employment contract can only begin once the degree that qualifies for doctoral study (a higher university degree or equivalent) has been completed.

Applications will be assessed based on the quality and feasibility of the research plan. Additionally, the ability and motivation to complete a doctoral degree according to the research plan, as demonstrated during previous studies and in other contexts, will be evaluated. The research plan must align with the research profile of the doctoral programme. Applicants' qualifications will also be assessed through an evaluation focusing on creative and analytical thinking skills, the ability to work independently and goal-oriented, and the capacity for constructive collaboration with others.

The selected doctoral researchers will be employed by the University of Helsinki and are expected to reside in Finland during the employment period. Each position and employee will be placed in a suitable faculty, faculty unit, or independent institute.

Research work, or parts of it, may be conducted outside the University of Helsinki, for example, at a government research institute, company, or other organization in Finland, but the employment relationship will be with the University of Helsinki, which will also provide academic supervision. Temporary international research visits are possible by separate agreement.

Interested?

The application period ends on September 9, 2024. The online competence and working style task will be organized between 12:00 on September 12 and 23:59 (EEST) on September 16, 2024, according to your schedule. Applicants will be notified of the decisions by December 2024.
