We are now looking for a

Doctoral Researcher in Immunology

to join us in the Research Unit of Biomedicine and Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine. The position is open in the research group led by Academy Research Fellow Pirjo Åström.

The Research Unit of Biomedicine and Internal Medicine carries out high-quality research in selected focus areas in biomedical and translational research and in internal medicine. The biomedical and translational research include studies on the molecular mechanisms and potential therapies of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases as well as immunological disorders. The research unit is responsible for the teaching of pharmacology and toxicology, physiology, medical microbiology and immunology, and internal medicine at the Faculty of Medicine.

About the job

We are examining various aspects of the human immune system, including inflammation and susceptibility to infections. Our special interests are in immune defense and inflammation of nervous system in aiming to find novel disease mechanisms and susceptibility genes. We utilize patient samples, in vitro and in vivo models, as well as databases in our studies. We also develop in vitro models and tools for research in immunology and cell biology. Our research group consists of early career researchers, postdocs and undergraduate students. We work with international and national collaborators consisting of experts from various fields, including medicine, biochemistry, immunology and biotechnology.

Who are you?

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:

  • Master's degree in biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, medicine or similar
  • Expertise in cell culture and experimentation, biochemistry and molecular biology techniques
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience in academic writing and reading
  • Motivation to work in a multidisciplinary and multinational environment

We also appreciate

  • Hands-on expertise on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC)
  • Previous research/knowledge on immunology
  • Finnish language skills

Salary

The position is fixed-term, starting 01.04.2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and continuing until 31.08.2027. The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 2500-2900 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
